Abnormal Glucose Regulation and Treatment Strategies for Insulin Resistance HIV-Infected Patients
نویسنده
چکیده
HIV-infected patients receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy often demonstrate abnormalities in glucose regulation, in association with changes in fat distribution. In the majority of cases, these abnormalities are best characterized by insulin resistance and impaired glucose tolerance, rather than overt diabetes mellitus and fasting hyperglycemia. Insulin resistance may result from direct effects of antiretroviral therapy, changes in fat distribution or abnormal regulation of fat metabolism and adipocytokines. Use of insulin sensitizing agents may be rationale to reduce cardiovascular risk and improve related metabolic and body fat abnormalities in HIV-infected patients.

Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome is one of the most commen hyper androgenic disorders affecting women, its prevalence being estimated at 5% – 10%. Our goal was to survey abnormal glucose tolerance, insulin resistance and incidence of diabetes type 2 in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome. Materials and methods: This investigation is a descriptive – analytic study which is done to su...
متن کاملDisorders of glucose metabolism among HIV-infected women.
BACKGROUND Abnormal glucose metabolism in HIV-infected patients has largely been attributed to the use of protease inhibitors. However, most studies of glucose metabolism in HIV-infected patients have focused on men or have lacked appropriate control groups. METHODS We assessed the factors associated with previously diagnosed diabetes among 620 middle-aged women with or at risk for HIV infect...
متن کاملMetformin in the treatment of HIV lipodystrophy syndrome: A randomized controlled trial.
CONTEXT A syndrome of lipodystrophy, characterized by fat redistribution and insulin resistance, has been estimated to affect the majority of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals who are treated with combination antiretroviral therapy. There are no proven therapies for the metabolic disturbances associated with HIV lipodystrophy syndrome. OBJECTIVE To determine the safety a...
متن کاملInsulin resistance, glucose intolerance and diabetes mellitus in HIV-infected patients.
An increased prevalence of insulin resistance, glucose intolerance and diabetes has been reported in HIV infection in the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era. This development might be clinically significant because of its association with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality as well as the therapeutic challenges of managing polypharmacy. The development of insulin resistance, gl...
متن کاملEvaluation of Lamivudine Resistance Mutations in HBV/HIV Co-infected Patients
Background and Objective: The drug resistance mutations are key elements in the failure of long-term treatment of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections. The mutation in the YMDD motif in the P gene of HBV is the most critical factor in antiviral drug (especially lamivudine) resistance. This study aimed to assess the YMDD motif and other polymerase gene mutati...
